How Back Catalog Transfers to Rexius Records Work – Step by Step

2 min read

Transferring your existing music catalog to Rexius Records is a straightforward process designed to ensure the catalog is transferred securely without losing stream counts or downtime of your music. Here’s a step-by-step overview of how a typical back catalog transfer works:

Step 1: Initial Discussion #

We begin with an open conversation about your interest in transferring your catalog. You can reach out to niklas@rexiusrecords.com who is catalog responsible at the company, and we’ll outline the process and answer any questions.

Step 2: Keep Your Releases Live #

Do not remove your music from your current distributor until we’ve confirmed your catalog is fully live through Rexius Records. This prevents any gaps in availability, potential loss of streams, or disruption to your audience and platform algorithms.

Step 3: Agreement Preparation #

We’ll prepare an addendum or separate agreement that specifies:

  • Which tracks and albums are included in the transfer
  • The terms of royalty distribution as outlined in your existing agreement with Rexius Records

Note: Different percentages may apply to different types of income or releases. For example, splits can vary between streaming, downloads, physical sales, licensing, and sync placements. All specifics are detailed in your contract.

Step 4: Shared Project Folder #

We’ll provide a shared project folder (via Google Drive) where you can:

  • Fill in all relevant metadata using a provided spreadsheet. We’ll prefill this with fields like the ISRC or be able to get most of the existing metadata via our transfer tool. Fill in all the details we are asking for.
  • Upload audio files for all tracks to be transferred in the right folder.
  • Specify if any releases should be excluded (e.g., if they are signed to another label).
  • Fill in any master split participant that we should get royalties.

Step 5: Transfer Initiation #

Once the agreement is signed:

  • We upload your catalog through our distributor (Symphonic).
  • You’ll be invited to royalty splits, allowing you to track your earnings.

Step 6: Dual Availability Period #

It will take approximately 7-10 days, until both your original and Rexius-distributed versions will be live on Spotify and other platforms at the same time. This ensures the transition is seamless and the new versions are fully operational before any old versions are removed.

Step 7: Confirmation and Takedown #

Once we confirm all releases are live and correctly mapped, we’ll notify you. At that point, you can take down your previous releases from your former distributor.

Distribution Fees & Royalties #

  • Our distributor (Symphonic) charges a distribution fee:
    • 9% for releases originally distributed before January 1, 2024
    • 15% for releases after that date
  • The remaining royalty is then distributed according to your agreement with Rexius Records.
  • No annual fees are charged for catalog management (unlike some other platforms).
  • Royalty splits and percentages for different income types (streaming, downloads, physical, sync, licensing) may differ and are specified in your agreement.

Additional Notes & Opportunities #

  • YouTube monetization is included at no extra cost.
  • Opportunities for sync (TV/film/games) can be discussed separately; these always require a new agreement for those specific tracks.
  • Label Name at the copyright line will be changed to Rexius Records, (or our upcoming sub-labels if applicable), please let us know if you want to keep the copyright line.
  • You will still own all rights.

Benefits of Transferring Your Catalog #

  • All releases managed in one place
  • Simpler, more transparent royalty reporting
  • Lower overall cost for catalogs with moderate streaming numbers
  • Future opportunities for sync, promotion, and additional support
  • No extra cost for any participant in the team receiving royalties, unlike many other platforms.
