About budgets in the music business

1 min read

To release music will either take time or money. Probably both. We are very aware that all artists have different means and we don’t like to limit the artists we sign based on their budget. However, we respect that creating quality music and quality releases take both time and money and to successfully do what we do, we need to take this into account. Therefore, we tailor-make a project based on your means. It is an approach based on what we can do with what we have rather than what the goals are.

We carefully try to analyze your situation, your goals and your means to see if it is reasonable to expect a successful project together. If you are a newcomer, who hasn’t reached out successfully on your own yet, with no budget and the goal to become world famous within a year and expect to get everything served, we would probably see a very small chance for a successful project together.

If we believe a project can be successful tailor a project suited for your unique situation and your goals and focus on the right things and on what we can achieve.

Here are some thoughts about budgets:

  • A large budget is not completely correlated with great results. We’ve seen successes with both high and low budgets.
  • Some genres will need a larger budget than others (Rock Band Settings…)
  • If you have the means to do something yourself, such as press photos or music production, please do.
  • We believe the most important part of a release project is to create great music, so if you have a low budget, it’s better to put it into the production phase than marketing.

We always strive to cut unnecessary costs out of the equation to focus on things that will give you value in the end. We strongly dislike unnecessary administrative work, and we have automated a lot of that so that we can spend more time talking about other stuff than project updates to each other over a coffee, or two. Our Rexius Project Management System (Globi) currently does around the equivalent of 1600 hours of work (sending emails, creating pdf:s, retrieve information, e-signing contracts, create reports etc) for us per month.

We also try to create financing solutions that will “increase the pie”. For example, we often subsidies projects, offer payment plans, and somtimes working with recoupments (when creating value).
